Sony look to add movie and game to one Blu-ray disk

Sony has one big advantage with the PS3 – it’s the only console currently on the market that has built-in Blu-ray capabilities. Sure, the Xbox 360 had an HD-DVD add-on but as we all know that technology is no longer with us.

As Sony looks to take advantage of the high storage capacity capabilities of the Blu-ray disks, their aim is to combine both a full length feature film and a PlayStation game on the one disk. They look to achieve this by 2010 – just five months away.

Sony will look to justify this decision by claiming that they are doing it for reasons of convenience but I think it is more likely to be for reasons of cost. Get consumers to buy two items of media for almost the same price of the two separate items but only have to produce one.

John Koller, director of hardware marketing for the PS3, has stated in an interview with Video Business “We are actively pushing and the way that we see the future is that the movie and the game are placed on the same disc. There are a lot of developers who say we have a game based on a movie wouldn’t it be great to join these together?”

At least it’s another development to look forwards to. Whether it will prove to be an advantage to the consumer we’ll have to wait and see how popular it proves to be.

Target, the US retailer have revealed that they have received a revised Sony PS3 console package containing the 80GB PS3, Dualshock controller and two free games. It retails at the same $399 as previously. Is this package instead of the much anticipated price cut?

The Sony PS3 and Microsoft Xbox are both great games consoles, but which is best. I think it depends on price and features. The PS3 has Blu-ray, wireless networking and free PSN. The Xbox doesn’t have any of these but it’s much cheaper. Which you prefer therefore depends on if features or just honest gameplay matters to you.
